Educator. Biologist. Lifelong Learner.
Teaching
I currently teach biology at Broward College, where I work with students in both lecture and laboratory settings.
My approach to teaching is simple: understanding should come before memorization. I want students to understand why biological processes happen, how concepts connect, and why the science matters beyond an exam.
Courses Taught:
BSC 1005 — General Biology
BSC 2010L — General Biology Laboratory
My experience in education also includes years of STEM tutoring, curriculum development, scientific presentations, and science communication.
Research Interests
My scientific interests center on understanding biological systems from the molecular level to the evolutionary scale.
Areas of interest include:
Biochemistry & Cellular Metabolism:
-
Understanding how metabolic pathways, mitochondrial function, and cellular energetics contribute to normal biology and disease.
-
Genetics & Genomics
-
Exploring how genes, genetic variation, and genomic information influence biological processes.
Origins of Life:
-
Exploring one of biology's largest questions: how life emerged, evolved, and became increasingly complex.
Metabolic Disease:
-
Investigating how disruptions in normal metabolism can alter cellular function and contribute to disease.
Featured Graduate Research
Rethinking Maple Syrup Urine Disease Through Cellular Metabolism:
My graduate research explored Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) beyond the traditional framework of branched-chain amino acid accumulation. I examined how disruptions in branched-chain amino acid metabolism may influence mitochondrial carbon flow, anaplerosis, the TCA cycle, and ultimately cellular energy production.
This work considers MSUD through a broader metabolic and bioenergetic lens, exploring how impaired amino acid metabolism may contribute to disturbances in mitochondrial function and cellular energy homeostasis.
Science Communication
My passion for science extends beyond research and the classroom. Through writing, teaching, presentations, and digital media, I aim to make complex scientific ideas understandable and interesting to broader audiences.
My science communication work includes my book, A Paradoxical Life: Where Did We Come From?, educational content through Professor Mompoint, and science writing exploring biology, evolution, and the origins of life.
Science is more than what we know. It is how we ask better questions.
